Mary Wickes recorded Laverne with six lines still to go when she died in October 1995, and Jane Withers stepped in to finish them, which is why the film's driest gargoyle quietly carries two voices. Jason Alexander and Charles Kimbrough handled Hugo and Victor, so Disney effectively hired George Costanza to heckle a cathedral. Mattel's 1996 minis are tiny, grey and still bickering, scaled for a pocket rather than a plinth. Ninety-six was a strange year for Disney merch.
