Tim Curry was apparently so unnerving in the makeup that the producers kept the child actors away from him between takes, so their terror on screen was the real thing. This is his 1990 Pennywise blown up to Mega Scale, thirty-eight centimetres of grinning Derry nightmare. Press him and he talks: six phrases in that sing-song menace, including the line about everyone floating down there. Bright suit, orange pom-poms, the lot. The clown that put a generation off storm drains.
