Stan Lee and Gene Colan rushed Mar-Vell out in 1967, partly so Marvel could grab the Captain Marvel name before anyone else did. A Kree spy sent to scout Earth, he took one look at us and switched sides. His exit was even braver. The Death of Captain Marvel, Jim Starlin's 1982 graphic novel, killed him with cancer rather than a cosmic villain, and fans still get misty about it. Classic red and blue with the gold starburst on the chest. The Kree have never looked this good.
