"Number 53. Everybody knows what this is."
Disney picked 53 for the 1968 film because producer Bill Walsh followed the Dodgers and Don Drysdale wore that number. Nothing to do with cars at all. Mattel put the licence on the card and let the deco do the rest: white enamel body, red white and blue stripes straight down the middle, 53 on the bonnet and the doors, white five-spokes.
